"Month of Doom" Complete

You may remember me discussing about a month ago that Bryan and I were going to be completing a yeast cleanse.

We. Did. It.

And though we had painful moments (man did I just want some cheese and BBQ sauce - but not together, though), we honestly did a pretty fabulous job, if I do say so myself.

I've lost 10lbs, and Bryan has lost 9lbs, which we are also pretty stoked about, especially since 80% of this diet is something we can reasonably continue doing.

Highlights:
- Neither of us crave breads or carbs anymore (though we both missed potatoes a little bit)
- We've gotten used to minimal amounts of sweetness, so things that are sweetened "regularly" seem excessive, and quite frankly, gross (ex: regular ketchup)
- Bryan has mastered his addiction to diet coke
- Now 10-20 of dark chocolate chips satisfies any sweets craving I have
- We are both sleeping better and have more energy
- We've learned new ways of making dishes and are willing to experiment more in the kitchen

Bummers:
- My joints still ache, although the really bad flare ups are happening less often
- I still crave dairy. I'm allergic to it, and I haven't had it in a month, and yet it's still just as appealing as ever (dang it)
- Bryan still is having some anxiety/stress issues

We haven't resolved everything, but we've taken a major step forward to reclaiming health and wellness. I'm proud of the way we've learned to cook better, and using substitutes we wouldn't have used previously.

I love that our girls now think almond/coconut milk is normal.
I love that they've only had goldfish 3 times in a month and a half.
I love that we sleep soundly (when no one wakes up unhappy *ahem, Emma*).
I love that we completed the cleanse, and know that we are capable of continuing to take control of what we consume.

Yeast Cleanse

I alluded to a month long diet Bryan and I are doing in my previous post, but I haven't followed up until now because I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to say.

We have known for some time that something odd was up with me. I've been constantly exhausted, excessively moody, gaining weight, and having so much trouble with my menstrual cycles, and Bryan has experienced an increase anxiety and irritability over the last year or so.

My primary care physician and an endocrinologist were unable to help me. I was so frustrated I considered seeing a psychologist, because I was beginning to think it was all in my head. Before doing that, Bryan decided that we would both go to see Dr. McManus at The Woodlands' Institute of Health and Wellness. This office is a rather unconventional place in modern medicine because they focus on the root cause of symptoms versus throwing medication at what hurts and doesn't work. It reminds me distinctly of the positive experiences I've had with our chiropractor and midwife. I firmly believe there is a time and place for prescription medications and modern medical advances, but I also recognize that people have become MORE ill and MORE sick the more we are treated. We decided this was the route we wanted to try.

After having been told my multiple doctors that we were fine, just out of shape, we have since learned through The Woodland's Institute that:
- I have a borderline case of Hashimoto's and Bryan has a full case. We are now going to basically be a wheat-and-gluten free family.
- I have a high allergy to cow milk, goat milk, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, and casein (the protein in most dairy), as well as moderate allergies to whey and eggs. We will be minimizing these foods.

Had we known about these issues years ago, we would not be in the condition we are in now.
In order to change up our diet to make us feel better we are completing a 28 day Yeast-Free (dairy free, grain free, sugar free) diet, as well as taking anti-yeast medications for the duration of the diet to kill off the yeast. The problem with yeast is that it makes itself so at home in the digestive system that other vital nutrients can't do their job because they are blocked. We will get rid of the yeast overgrowth, continue to take probiotics as well as drastically reduce the amount of sugar our family consumes in the future. We are also taking supplements such as cortisone, BH12, iodine, progesterone (in my case), as well as a few others, to try to increase the amount of those essential nutrients as we break through the wall of yeast.

Today we are on Day 6(!), and other than one accidental mess up, we have not cheated and are starting to experience changes.

We are eating lots of protein (shredded salsa/green chili chicken, venison chili, egg and sausage scramble, seasoned pulled pork, bean noodles with homemade meatballs and sauce), as well as a large number of veggies (greens, zucchini, squash, cauliflower, broccoli, etc) and healthy fats (such as butter, olive & coconut oil, nuts and seeds). We are discovering new foods that we like, and starting to realize that some of the foods we did like don't sound as appealing as our addiction to sugar is slowly being negated (pretty cool, eh?).

The first 2 weeks of our Month of Doom (as we've nicknamed this cleanse) are fruit-free, but starting on Day 15 we can add some berries and a few other fruit (apples, cantaloupe) back into our diet (thank goodness - I love fruit).

What about the kids? Well, we are not doing this program with them as strictly as we have to, but their addiction to sugar is slowly being addressed as well. It's been 6 days since they've had any goldfish or fig nutons in our house. They are learning to snack on fruit and peanut butter on veggies or gluton free pita, and Clara has embraced sweet potato "chips" while Emma has discovered an enjoyment of nuts and seeds. We still have them drinking milk (although it's more and more almond or coconut milk), and they can still have yogurt, although the makeup of the yogurt they can have has changed. They are still allowed to have some fruit juice (it keeps them pooping regularly, which we appreciate). So it's not perfect with them, but they are learning to like more things, even though they've been rather resistant to the changes. In case you were wondering, yes, they both still REALLY love popcorn chicken.

We are experiencing some "die off" symptoms - fatigue, sweating, headaches, irritability (it's hard to give up lots of our favorite foods!), but those are changing too, and before we know it, we will be happy with the changes that are taking place.

I would be happy to give you more information about what we are doing and why if you wanted it, and I'll update you on how it's going in another week or so. Who knows? Maybe - JUST maybe - I will like avocado by the end of this month (unlikely, but maybe! hehe).

If you would like to pray for us during this month, we would appreciate prayers for patience as we learn to cook and try new things, prayers for commitment and perseverance as we are tempted to eat things not on the plan, and most of all, prayers that this is a successful experience for us so that we feel better and are willing to take our nutrition into our own hands at the end!

A light picture Thursday (Alice Dress Rehearsal!)

Today I was a bit of a nervous wreck. Far more nervous than I think I will be tomorrow.

I got almost zero sleep because this little beauty trying on hats and shows and admiring herself in the mirror below was up MOST of the night. Ahhhhh.
why hello there
Plus we had our "Alice in Wonderland" dress rehearsal! It was awful to begin with, but slowly got better and then by the end I thought, "man! we can do this by tomorrow night!" :)

I was everywhere, but ended up here with a script, microphone, and access to lights :)
most of the cast receiving instructions about bowing before being dismissed
Then Bryan and I got to pick our our BIKES!!! I am OVER THE MOON about this. And we picked up the bike trailer. to say Clara is excited about this is a major understatement :) hehe

Emma entertaining herself
Check out those "super" shoes :) heheheh
Happy Thursday! And please pray for the "Alice" cast and tomorrow!!

WHOOP! (PS I designed this flyer :) isn't it fun!?)

Children's Museum: Easter Style + Extras

Today and tomorrow The Woodland's Children's Museum is hosting their annual Easter festivities. We thought we were going to be so smart and get there right when it opened on Friday because it would surely be less crowded than on Saturday. If that IS true, then oh my gosh Saturday will be INSANE, because it was already out of control hectic this morning! Mercy!

On the way there, Clara "called" Lulu and had a full conversation! You sure were feeling chatty, Lulu! Didn't you know it? :)
"Yeahh, we gonna see da firetruck, Woowoo. How you?"
The Easter bunny was there, much to Clara's delight.
Hugs for the Easter bunny
She looks unhappy, but really she just didn't know what was happening

They had a few fun games and crafts set up for the kids around the museum. Clara liked the egg sort:

A pink balloon! oh boy!
One of the crafts was making a bunny mask:

Then we died an egg. She was very focused.
Cruisin' sisters
Playing with choochoo trains
Why not walk around and around and around a train table with a banana?
:)
 Emma LOVED this light thing
Observing how big sister does it
Trying to imitate
It's harder than it looks for those little hands!
Better taste it and see if that helps :)

And another one:

Riah and Clara always enjoy the kitchen:
Serving up some food
Washing some dishes and some fruit
Emma was getting antsy so I put her down in the only relatively unoccupied area in the place, the little tunnel. She spent a long time peering into the various windows to see what was going on in the bigger area, haha. The view might just be a little different in a square window than a round one! Plus some of them had color tinting, oooo fancy.

I don't know if you can really see this or not, but this is Emma scampering down the tunnel once she got tired of the moving window show:

Checking out Clara's groceries
Clara was VERY sweet and let Emma help her push her basket. I'm proud of her.

Sweet video:

Emma saying hi to Jonah
By this time the kids were getting cranky and the museum was getting even more crowded so it was time to leave. Emma took a nap and Mommy took a nap when we got home, but Daddy didn't get much of one, and Clara absolutely refused.

Once we were all up, we enjoyed the nice weather we've been having:

Clara's getting pretty good with her scooter!
(I'm not sure why this video ended up being named "Scott Wrong" - autocorrect maybe? Who knows!?)
Video:

Once Clara got EXTREMELY cranky, we decided to bail on the great outdoors and come inside to watch Olaf for a teeny bit before bed.

In that short time frame Emma fell face first onto the tile by our fireplace.
SO.MUCH.BLOOD. and so many tears :(

I quickly grabbed her favorite blanket and let her nurse to calm down, but unfortunately isn't ideal either because it was her little mouth that hurt, but it did eventually soothe her, the mommy cuddles more than anything.

She busted her lip in 3 places, and tore the lip tie (the piece of gum that extends from the upper lip into the area between her teeth).
Once she calmed down a little bit
I have a graphic picture of the gum tear for her doctor, but I'll spare you
Ice made it a little bit better too
After all of the excitement both girls were ready for bed. Emma passed out in her crib right away, but Clara fell asleep on Mommy. Not napping makes it REALLY hard to get to the end of the day. Plus she's still just not feeling really well.

Didn't even stir when Daddy carried her upstairs
I hope everyone had a great Friday!

Busy bee

It has been a crazy busy week!!! I've had plenty to blog about, but no time to do it.

Quick recap of the week's highlights:

I'M BACK AT IT! I'm signed up at the YMCA, my hip got the all clear, my OB gave me the all clear from my c-section, and now I can exercise again - hallelujah!

On Monday I was swamped with tons of doctor's appointments (see the above statement regarding OB and Orthopedic doc) so Tuesday began my new fitness routine. I bet Michelle and her two littles at the YMCA with Emma, and we dropped off the kids and went to the Body Combat class. It kicked my butt, people, but in a (mostly) good way :)

As you can see by the FitBit flower, I did well :) Whoo hoo!
Then I took a shower and snuggled with Emma as a reward.

Later that day Clara rock'n'roll'ed at Freebirds since kids eat free on Tuesdays there.

Wednesday, I didn't make it back to the gym because I spent the entire day at school. I had to move out of my old classroom and into my new classroom - so even without the gym I got lots of steps and stairs in. I had lots of students willing to snuggle Emma while Mom, Michelle and I worked after Emma got tired of hanging out in the K'tan.

The fabulous and fearless 11th and 12th graders:

I can't believe 5 of them will be graduating TONIGHT!!! I think it's awesome that I've been here for the entire time our high school has been around, and now we have our first graduating class. It's really awesome. I have the best job on the planet.

We got home from school around 3:30 and decided to take a quick siesta before picking up sissy. She looks so tiny!! She kept snoozing even after the alarm went off to wake me up to get up and get ready to go get Clara.

That night was the Legacy Admin/Teacher/Staff dinner at Lupe Tortilla. Sadly this picture came out super blurry, but you can see both Michelle & I with our wee ones.
The dinner was great! Yummy, with excellent conversation. I also got to learn some new and unexpected things about some of my co-workers :) Loved being there.

Thursday I got up and went back to the YMCA for what they call their "Smart Start" program. They get you hooked up with their Fit Links program, and  help you set up a fitness plan. It's actually probably one of the best gym starts I've ever had. I'm really excited about it!
(And between the Body Combat class and then my intro to Fit Links, I am so sore!! In a hurts-so-good kind of way.)

Rewarded this time with Emma snuggles and smiles :)

Megan made the sweet headband for her - isn't it adorable!?

Thursday night was our MOPS Mom's Night Out, and I'm actually going to make a separate post for it.
