Thursday afternoon Mom, Dad, Bryan & I took off for Port O'Connor. My parents had won a fishing trip for 4 in a silent auction and very sweetly took the two of us with them :) We stayed at the lodge for the night - along with 7 other men and 3 guides. There were some *ahem* seriously interesting characters. I guess when a person drinks too much, has no filter on what they say, and have an obnoxious personality, it's just difficult for people to stand being around you for any length of time ... especially an entire evening!
The major event Thursday night was the fact that this wooden porch swing decided (after several large men had swung on it!) that the prime time for it to break and collapse would be when Bryan, Mom & I were swinging on it.
It fell the foot and half to the floor or so and scared the dickens out of us. The salty sea air is just rough on most things - and that includes metal chain links! Gave me and Mom a pretty good jolt, so we were a little sore the next day. Crazy.
The next morning we woke up bright and early to hit the water.
Happy Friday Morning Sunrise!
The boat ride before 6am was a little chilly :)
I caught the first fish pretty much right away, and then it went verrrrry quiet for a while, and no one caught much of anything so Tim (our guide) moved us to a different spot (after giving me a chance to use the restroom thank goodness!)
Then we started catching fish like crazy!!!! We probably caught close to 80 fish, but many were too short (have to be at least 15" to go in the icebox), or the wrong kind (like small mean little catfish).
Dad with the traditional "hunting" picture :) Too bad we didn't get one of the big fish as our photo-graphical documentation!
I think Mom managed to catch almost every little fish in the bay! It was too funny. She did catch a few big ones too though!
Bryan's an excellent caster, but he occasionally struggles with getting the fish hooked. We tag-team well!
The results of our "labor" ----- more like the results of some serious fun!
We limited out on trout - everyone caught their 10, so all told we had 40 trout sitting in our icebox. It was wonderful! We didn't catch any redfish ... maybe next time.
While the fish were being gutted, there were insane amounts of pelicans waiting in the water for the junk that the fishermen throw out.
What made it so fun to watch were the porpoises (think "dolphin") swimming in the water and attacking the pelicans to grab the fish remains they caught.
In the picture below the porpoise was litteraly dragging the pelican underwater to wrestle the fish out of his bill. It was awesome to watch!
After showers, packing up, and getting our fish we headed back to Sugarland to pick up our puppy that Marissa very sweetly agreed to watch while we were gone (thanks so much!) and headed home. We were sunburned and exhausted, but it was a great mini-vacation. Thanks for taking us!
